A ‘First’ in the History of the Award

Until recently, the winners of the UP Population Institute Book Grant were all Master in Population Studies (MPOPs) majors. Semester after semester since its inception in 2014, the award was given to MPOPs majors, namely, Joshua Mariano, Ma. Rowena Campos, Klarriness Tanalgo, and Jaycel Hurley. MA Demography (MADEM) majors would always go home empty-handed.

In the first semester of AY 2016-2017, this trend was finally broken by a first-year MADEM student who also received the highest average ever since the institution of the award. In a simple ceremony held at the UPPI Seminar Room on January 23, 2017, Dr. Maria Midea Kabamalan, Director of UPPI, handed the award certificate and cash prize to Ms. Denise Hyacinth Joy B. Musni for besting the rest of the UPPI graduate students with a GWA of 1.1.

In the same occasion, Ms. Jaycel Hurley, awardee for the second semester of AY 2015-2016 who was unavailable then, was also given her certificate and cash prize.
