The 2016 Philippine Population Association (PPA) Annual Scientific Conference took place on February 3-5, 2016 at the One Vittoria Hotel in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur.

With the theme “Transcending Demographic Trends: Gearing Up Toward an Aging Population”, the conference was highlighted by successive presentations in plenary from Commission on Population Executive Director Juan Antonio Perez III, Dr. Shelley de la Vega of the Institute of Aging, University of the Philippines Manila, and Dr. Linda Adair of the University of North Carolina, concerning elderly health and economic well-being. This was followed by parallel sessions through the third and last day with the following topics: a. Young Adult Fertility and Sexuality (YAFS) Survey findings; b. A flooding risk indexing and mapping project in Cebu; c. Aging; d. Sexual orientation and gender identity/expression (SOGIE); e. Marriage and family; f. Data and methods in demography and; g. Reproductive health.

Faculty, staff, and graduate students from the UP Population Institute led by Director Maria Midea M. Kabamalan took part in the event as paper and poster presenters as well as moderators and discussants. The keynote speaker was Undersecretary Florita Villar of the Policy and Plans Group, Department of Social Welfare and Development.

On the first day of the conference, the UPPI conducted an introductory course on basic demographic concepts as well as separate sessions on SPSS and Atlas.ti qualitative analysis by Dr. Florio Arguillas of the Cornell Institute for Social and Economic Research and Dr. Marie Joy Arguillas of the UP Diliman Department of Sociology.
