Assoc. Prof. Ignacio delivers UPPI special lecture for Buwan ng KAPP 2026
In celebration of the Buwan ng KAPP 2026 with the theme, “Konsensya ng Bayan, Katutubo, at Kalikasan,” Assoc. Prof. Jose Andres Ignacio delivered a special UPPI lecture titled, “Learning Sustainable Life: Integration of IP Culture and Science in Education for Sustainable Development,” focusing on the Pulangiyen tribe experience, last 23 October 2026 at Palma Hall, UP Diliman.
Dr. Ignacio conducts a lecture at the Institute for UP Diliman students in line with the theme of Buwan ng KAPP 2026.
Dr. Ignacio started the presentation by providing context on the socio-ecological challenges faced by the Pulangiyen tribe in Bukidnon, such as the degradation of the uplands due to commercial agriculture and the structural barriers to smallholder corn farming.
Anchored on the integral ecology framework, Dr. Ignacio highlighted how culture-based education empowers the Pulangiyen youth to uphold their indigenous identity and culture, manage their natural resources, and protect their ancestral domains.
Students from various UP Diliman colleges listen attentively to Dr. Ignacio’s discussion on culture-based education and sustainable development.
Drawing from his experience as a former Director for Planning and Geomatics Manager of the Environmental Science for Social Change (ESSC), Dr. Ignacio featured the educational initiatives of the Apu Palamguwan Cultural Education Center (APC), which ESSC helped establish, and how it contributes to maintaining the Pulangiyen way of life. Beyond guiding the youth towards developing respect and pride in their cultural heritage, part of the APC curriculum also involves organic agriculture, forest management, and water resource management to prepare them for their roles as stewards of their lands.
UPPI Asst. Prof. Mark Ryan Paguirigan awards the certificate of appreciation to Dr. Ignacio after the lecture.
Aside from the current UPPI graduate students, undergraduate students of UP Diliman from the following courses also attended the event: Geography, Political Science, Education, Engineering, Statistics, Architecture, and Sports Science. The event concluded with a photo opportunity between the speaker and the attendees.
