Congratulations on your appointment, Dir. Marquez!

UPPI Associate Professor Dr. Maria Paz N. Marquez is the new Director of the Institute, effective 1 August 2026 until 31 July 2029.

She recently earned her Doctoral degree in Education (Research and Evaluation) from the College of Education, University of the Philippines Diliman. She also holds a Master of Arts degree in Demography from the Institute and a Bachelor of Science degree in Statistics from the UP School of Statistics.

Dr. Marquez has been teaching at UPPI for more than 30 years, actively serving in various key roles in quality assurance, data archiving, academic program coordination, and in training and research throughout her tenure at the Institute.

She has published numerous research articles on reproductive health, adolescent sexuality, and fertility. Just last year, she was involved in a UNFPA-funded research project evaluating an out-of-school Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) program for young people involved in sex work. She was an Australian Award Fellowship grantee for the workshop on Driving Responsive Action for Adolescent Health in the Philippines Utilizing Local Data. She is also one of the co-editors of the book “The Filipino Adolescent and Youth: Change, Continuity, and Context,” which featured key findings from the Young Adult Fertility and Sexuality Study (YAFS5).

The UPPI community proudly welcomes and supports Dir. Marquez as she steps into her new role. Following the strong legacy of previous directors, the Institute is confident that under her guidance, UPPI will continue to shape future demographers and population specialists, sustain research on demography and population studies, and deliver meaningful public service through extension work.
