UPPI Participates in the 2026 PPA International Scientific Conference in Cagayan de Oro City
UPPI faculty members, researchers, and students presented their research papers and posters at the Philippine Population Association International Scientific Conference (PPAISC) held from March 5 to 6, 2026, at Xavier University, Cagayan de Oro City. The conference centered on the theme, “Intersections: Population, Environment, and Climate Resilience in the Philippines.”
In total, UPPI faculty and graduate students (both current and former) showcased 21 papers and four poster presentations. In addition, UPPI faculty members chaired six of the 24 sessions during the two-day event.
UPPI delegates presented research studies covering a broad spectrum of issues: 1) reproductive health, including adolescent pregnancy and contraceptive use; 2) mental health, focusing on depression among older adults; and 3) climate-resilient urban planning, covering transport policy, disaster vulnerability, and social protection.
UPPI-DRDF projects also took center stage in three dedicated parallel sessions: two for the Longitudinal Study of Ageing and Health in the Philippines (LSAHP) and one for Evaluation of an Out-of-School Comprehensive Sexuality Education Delivery Program for Young People Involved in Sex Work (OOS-CSE). The LSAHP team shared findings on topics such as life satisfaction in old age, transnational family migration in relation to loneliness, grandparental childcare, and active life expectancy. Meanwhile, the OOS-CSE team presented insights from the managers, facilitators, and beneficiaries of a CSE program evaluated in their study.
As part of the pre-conference activities on March 4, 2026, UPPI also conducted an orientation on its graduate programs for faculty and students of the Xavier University College of Agriculture. The session was facilitated by UPPI faculty members Dr. Maria Midea Kabamalan, Dr. Christian Joy Cruz, and Dr. Jose Andres Ignacio. During the Data Users’ Forum, Dr. Kabamalan and Dr. Cruz presented an overview of available data resources from the Young Adult Fertility and Sexuality Study (YAFS) and the Longitudinal Study of Ageing and Health in the Philippines (LSAHP). Additionally, University Researcher Jeconiah Boongaling demonstrated how to navigate and utilize YAFS datasets for research purposes.
