Prof. Marquez presents the findings of the UPPI and UNFPA collaborative study on the potential impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on sexual and reproductive
health in the Philippines during the online broadcast of the Philippine celebration of World Population Day 2020.

In commemoration of World Population Day 2020 (July 11), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), together with the Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM), launched “Putting the Brakes on COVID-19: How to Safeguard the Health and Rights of Women and Girls”, a virtual event showcasing insights from resource persons and experts on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on three transformative goals of ending the unmet need for contraceptives, ending preventable maternal deaths, and ending gender-based violence and harmful practices. In line with the event, Prof. Maria Paz Marquez of the UP Population Institute (UPPI) presented the findings of the study conducted by UPPI in collaboration with the UNFPA on “The Potential Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Sexual & Reproductive Health in the Philippines”. The objective of the study is to estimate the potential impact of the pandemic on key sexual and reproductive health (SRH) indicators related to family planning, maternal health, and gender-based violence with the goal of aiding decision-makers in formulating evidence-based policies and programs. The study contextualizes SRH in the pandemic and sheds light on the possible consequences should the community quarantine continue until December this year.
