The training aimed to strengthen the knowledge base and skills related to demographic analysis of Pangasinan’s local population officers to which they can use for local planning and policy actions. Before delving into calculations of population indicators, Prof. Kabamalan and Asst. Prof. Cruz highlighted the importance of population data in crafting local programs and services tailored to the needs of constituents. For instance, analyzing the province’s age-sex structure could help them determine demands for appropriate education programs, health, and social services.

By the end of the workshop, the PPCLDO officers learned how to calculate and interpret demographic measures on population composition, population change, fertility, mortality, and migration. They also learned how to generate population pyramids to assess the age-sex composition of their cities and municipalities. Using this demographic evidence, the population program officers also built the demographic profile of their respective cities and municipalities and identified its policy and program implications as part of the workshop’s culminating activity.
