UPPI’s Asst. Prof. Cruz shares expertise on social policy and aging

UPPI Assistant Professor Christian Joy P. Cruz was a panel speaker at the 2025 Comparative Social Policy Symposium held at Lingnan University, Hong Kong, on November 2, 2025. The symposium, themed “Aligning Lives and Systems: Cultural, Institutional, and Policy Perspectives on Well-being,” featured a global panel of experts in social policy, sociology, and economics from Hong Kong, Philippines, USA, Mexico, and the United Kingdom. The discussions covered vital topics, including aging, well-being, gender, family, and the life course.

Her presentation, titled, “Growing Old Before Getting Rich: A Tale of Two Countries (Viet Nam and the Philippines),” showcased key findings from the Longitudinal Study of Ageing and Health in the Philippines (LSAHP) and Vietnam (LSAHV). Beyond describing the current health status and well-being of older people in both countries, she also noted how their differences in political structures, culture, and religion might help explain the differences in the economic wellbeing of older people in these two countries.

She also presented her study titled, “Online Surveys as Evidence for Policymaking: The Case of Hong Kong SAR” as a guest lecturer for a Policy Research and Evaluation Design course at Lingnan University on October 28, 2025.

Meanwhile, she served as a resource person for the workshop on “Regional Comparative Research on Old-Age Financial Preparedness in Asia: Wave 2: Measuring Old-Age Financial Preparedness,” held at the ADB Headquarters on November 4–5, 2025. The two-day workshop gathered ageing scholars from South Korea, the USA, China, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, Bangladesh, Viet Nam, and the Philippines. During the event, she presented her paper titled, “Economic Wellbeing of Older Filipinos: Insights from the Longitudinal Study of Ageing and Health in the Philippines (LSAHP).”
