Membership in the Commission on Population (POPCOM)

The UPPI sits as member of the Board of Commissioners of the Philippine Commission on Population (POPCOM), the country’s lead agency in the formulation of population and development policy.

Presidential decree 79, signed on December 8, 1972 also called the Revised Population Act of the Philippines amended Republic Act 6365 which, earlier in August 1971, created the Commission.

Section 6 of the decree called for the creation of the Board of Commissioners as the decision-making body of POPCOM, the board which would be composed of the Secretaries of Education and Culture, Health, and Social Welfare, the Dean (now Director) of the University of the Philippines Population Institute and the Director-General of the National Economic Development Authority.

Since 1972, the UPPI through its Director has sat as Commissioner for the POPCOM.
