The University of the Philippines Diliman, through the UP Population Institute (UPPI), has inked an agreement to participate in an academic exchange program with the University of Namur Department of Geography in Belgium.

Two students from the UP Population Institute (UPPI) - Ms. Charmaine T. Perez (MPOPS) and Ms. Maria Celeste H. Hermida (MADEM) - will be spending a semester from September to December of this year to attend short courses in the Francophone university, about an hour south of the Belgian capital Brussels.

As counterpart, the UPPI is hosting a PhD student from Namur, Mlle. Elisabeth Henriet, a graduate of Masters in Geographic Sciences from the Université Catholique de Louvain. She is doing field data collection in Guiuan, Eastern Samar, one of the areas hit hard by typhoon Yolanda in November 2013.

Completing the agreement is the exchange of two professors from both universities who will be spending some time in their respective partner-institutes. Dr. Sabine Henry of the University of Namur Geography department will be doing lectures in UP Diliman for two weeks sometime later this year while Dr. Grace T. Cruz will likewise fly for Namur in early 2017 for a similar academic undertaking.

The exchange belongs to the Key Action 1 scheme of the European Union-funded Erasmus+ programme where individuals wishing to enhance their skills, employability, and cultural awareness can apply and spend some time in a partner country.
