Master of Arts in Demography (MADEM) student Maria Karlene Shaw I. Cabaraban topped the general weighted average (GWA) rankings at the UP Population Institute (UPPI) for the first semester of academic year 2018-2019 making her the UPPI Academic Excellence Awardee for the said period.

With a GWA of 1.4, she bested the rest of the UPPI graduate students in both MADEM and Masters in Population Studies (MPoPs).

For her efforts, Ms. Cabaraban was awarded a certificate and cash prize of P5,000 in a simple ceremony on February 22, 2019 at the UPPI.

The award was instituted in 2014 to recognize the efforts of UPPI students in the pursuit of academic excellence. Formerly called the UPPI Alumni Book Grant, it was renamed to more accurately reflect on its intent.

In the previous semester, the awardee was Lyka Manglal-lan from MPoPs.
