Dr. Alcantara
Dr. Dely Alcantara

Dely was a research associate at UPPI in the 1970s. She left UPPI in the early 1980s when she married Ted Jojola and joined him in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Her migration to the US did not mean an end to her ties to UPPI and to the Philippines. Dely always carried the Philippines in her heart. Her dissertation explored gender roles, fertility and the status of married men and women in the Philippines.

Dely blazed a brilliant professional life in the US. She served as State Demographer of New Mexico for many years. Since 2011, she was Director of the Geospatial and Population Studies at the University of New Mexico. Dely was also a very staunch advocate for the promotion of diversity, human rights and social justice. She was the moving spirit in the founding of the New Mexico Asian American Family Center. In 2017, Dely and Ted put up MAJICAL Learning Montessori School in her hometown, Moncada, Tarlac. MAJICAL- Manoa Alcántara Jojola International Center for Arts & Language - honors the memory and gifts of Manoa, their son, who joined our Creator in 2000. Dely was brilliant, dynamic, passionate, hardworking, vibrant, joyful, generous. In her many roles, pursuits and endeavors, Dely never forgot what matters most – to love.
