For the year 2017, the Philippine Social Science Council (PSSC) chose UPPI professor Dr. Arnisson Andre C. Ortega to receive its Virginia A. Miralao Excellence in Research Award for his publication entitled Neoliberalizing Spaces in the Philippines: Suburbanization, Transnational Migration, and Dispossession.
According to PSSC Executive Director Amaryllis T. Torres, Ortega’s publication was chosen due to its “innovative take on several national and global contemporaneous events and how all these are unfolding to advance neoliberal tendencies in Philippine development” that showed “how cross- and inter-disciplinary work can contribute to a more meaningful and holistic understanding of social phenomena.”
On behalf of Dr. Ortega who is currently on leave, his award consisting of a commemorative plaque and a modest cash prize was received by Dr. Grace T. Cruz on March 17 at the PSSC Auditorium.
