Part of the extension work being undertaken by a number of faculty from the UP Population Institute (UPPI) is to provide support in the conduct of the annual Population Quiz in collaboration with the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Population Commission (POPCOM). UPPI faculty members involved in this activity are tasked in the formulation of test questions to be used in the regional and national population quiz As test formulators, part of their task is the identification of relevant and current materials and research outputs to be used as reviewers for the participants.

They also sit as members of the board of judges during the events themselves, specifically the annual NCR Regional Quiz held every November of the year with contestants from various high schools in each of the 17 cities and municipalities of Metro Manila and, subsequently, the National Population Quiz held every February or March.

Since 2012, the National Population Quiz has been subsumed as one of the activities under the DepEd’s National Festival of Talents (NFOT), a yearly event which provides students the chance to exhibit their skills in the arts and technical-vocational. Hence, apart from formulating test questions and preparation of materials, the faculty also take part in judging other contests such as essay writing, poster, and jingle making, among others.

For POPCOM Exec. Director Juan Antonio A. Perez III, the youth need to have a greater awareness of population, health and environment (PHE) issues and their interconnectedness. Precisely for this aim, the National PopQuiz is an advocacy tool aimed towards enhancing the youth’s cognizance of these issues in the quest for national development.
