The University of the Philippines Population Institute (UPPI) has a Visiting Professor from the University of Michigan.

Dr. George C. Alter currently holds three professorial positions at UMich. He is Research Professor at the Population Studies Center, Research Professor at the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research, Institute for Social Research, and Professor at the Department of History.

At the UPPI, Dr. Alter will be involved in a number of activities including the upcoming “Workshop on Historical Demography: Preparing & Analyzing Archival Data” which will be held on February 6-9 at the UPPI. For the four-day event, he will be giving lectures on the History of Western Historical Demography Studies, Sources and Methods in Historical Demography, Comparative Historical Demography: The Eurasia Project.

On February 14, Dr. Alter will also be giving a public lecture on Stopping and Spacing in Historical Europe and Contemporary Africa, where he will present methods towards the identification of stopping and spacing birth practices with 19th century Europe and 20th century Africa. The lecture is part of the 2018 UPPI Lecture Series.

Dr. Alter took part in the recently concluded Philippine Population Association Annual Scientific Conference (2018) held at the BP International Makiling on January 31- February 2, 2018. Under the panel on Historical Demography, he presented a paper entitled “From Data Scarcity to Data Abundance: The Role of Demographic Models in Historical Demography”.

Dr. Alter holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of Pennsylvania. His research interests center on family history, demography, and economic history. His most recent work include the impacts of economic hardships to demography in Europe and East Asia as well as the impacts of childhood health experiences in old age.

From February 12-15, Dr. Alter will be consulting with students interested in doing research on Historical Demography.
