Dr. Gilbert Gee is lead scholar in the Health of Philippine Emigrants Study (HOPES), a collaborative endeavor between researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Public Health, the UP Population Institute and Demographic Research and Development Foundation, and the University of San Carlos Office of Population Studies. HOPES looks into the impacts of migration on general health status and chronic diseases, food and beverage consumption habits, attitudes and beliefs, stress levels, and smoking and drinking habits of Filipinos in the United States.

Lead researcher for the UPPI is Dr. Maria Midea M. Kabamalan.
