Dr. Arnisson Andre C. Ortega

Dr. Arnisson Andre C. Ortega, Assistant Professor at the UP Population Institute, recently won an 8-month International Fellowship from the Urban Studies Foundation, a grant-making organization in the field of urban academic research and education.

For the duration of the fellowship spanning August 2017 to March 2018, Dr. Ortega will be working on his research project entitled ‘Postcolonial suburbanisms: a view from Manila’s fringe and beyond’ at the City Institute in York University, Canada under the mentorship of Professor Roger Keil. He will be looking at “the intersection of colonial history, transnational mobilities, real estate boom and dispossession that shape the urban-rural tensions underlying Manila’s suburban expansion.”

The fellowship award is part of the continuing effort of Dr. Ortega to examine the peculiarities of the Philippines suburbs in comparison with mainstream, largely North American narratives.
